There's a video store in Colts Neck, New Jersey, that has a back room filled with unlikely titles. Available for rent are such movies as Stanley Kubrick's "Napoleon," an unlikely collaboration between Ingmar Bergman and the Three Stooges titled "The Third Strawberry," "Four Flies on Green Felt" (a little-seen Muppet movie that's also among the most nihilistic horror movies of the 1970s) and these four H.P. Lovecraft adaptions:
"Herbert West: Reanimator," 1958. The full-color film starred Vincent Price in the title role, as well as Peggy Cummins and Francis Lederer.
"The Alchemist" from 1961. The full-color film starred Vincent Price in the title role, as well as Barbara Steele and Luana Anders. It's considered to be one of Roger Corman's best films.
"The Ghost and Mr. Chicken," from 1969. It was a loose adaption of "The Call of Cthulhu," reworked by Universal as a sequel to the 1966 hit "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken."
"The Thing on the Doorstep" from 1942. Production began a year ealier when Val Lewton being placed in charge of developing RKO's low-budget horror films. In search of horror stories that could compete with the pricier features made by Universal, Lewton aecured the rights to several stories by the late H.P. Lovecraft.
