The tragedy of the mythic hero is that they never reap the rewards of their own accomplishments. Most die horrible deaths; many wind up in their own cultural versions of hell. Wendy O. Williams was as epic a champion as we could have asked for, and we let the cops beat the shit out of her with impunity, prosecuted her in court for whatever charges we could invent, shamed her in print and then acted surprised when she took her own life in 1998. Through this lens, the inconsistent musical output of her band, The Plasmatics, feels inevitable. She deserved better in life, and deserves to be better remembered in death.
